Ultrasound of the bladder

Ultrasound of the Bladder: Description

Ultrasound examination of the bladder is a safe and effective method for assessing the condition of the organ using ultrasonic waves. These waves penetrate living tissues without harming health. Ultrasound has no contraindications and is an entirely painless procedure. Since it does not cause harm to the body, it can be performed multiple times without restrictions. This method is especially convenient for regular patient monitoring.

Ultrasound is a crucial tool for the timely detection and treatment of various diseases. It allows the assessment of the bladder’s size, shape, structure, and location, as well as the condition of its tissues and the thickness of its walls. A bladder ultrasound can detect stones, polyps, tumors, congenital anomalies, and diverticula—protrusions of the bladder wall. The method is also useful for diagnosing neurogenic bladder and pathological changes in surrounding tissues.

When Is a Bladder Ultrasound Prescribed?

A bladder ultrasound is ordered by a doctor if symptoms indicate potential abnormalities. The main indications include:

  • Presence of blood in the urine
  • Changes in urine color
  • Discomfort during urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Frequent or uncontrollable urination
  • Lower abdominal pain

Doctors also prescribe a bladder ultrasound in cases of suspected cystitis, congenital abnormalities, injuries, suspected tumors, or acute inflammatory conditions. Additionally, it is often used to monitor treatment progress and adjust therapy as needed.

How to Prepare for a Bladder Ultrasound

To obtain accurate examination results, it is essential to follow some recommendations. To minimize gas formation, a special diet should be followed. The following foods should be avoided:

  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Sweets
  • Pastries
  • Legumes
  • Carbonated drinks

Food should be steamed or stewed. Dinner before the examination should be no later than 7:00 PM. The following foods are allowed before the ultrasound:

  • Lean fish
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Porridge

On the day of the procedure, breakfast should be avoided. The bladder must be full before the ultrasound. At least one liter of liquid should be consumed two hours before the visit. After the first stage of the examination, the patient may use the restroom, allowing the doctor to assess the residual urine volume—an important factor in making an accurate diagnosis.

How Is a Bladder Ultrasound Performed?

Ultrasound can be performed using two main methods:

  1. Transabdominal method – The patient lies down while the doctor applies a transparent gel to the suprapubic area to ensure proper sensor contact with the skin. The doctor then moves the sensor over the area to obtain images of the bladder.
  2. Transrectal method – This approach provides images through the rectum and is used less frequently. It is typically performed for detailed examination in men.

For women, bladder ultrasound is usually conducted via the transabdominal method, which also allows an assessment of the entire female genitourinary system. In men, both the transabdominal and transrectal approaches may be used, with the latter offering a more detailed view. The procedure generally takes no more than 20 minutes, depending on the chosen method.

What Conditions Can a Bladder Ultrasound Detect?

Ultrasound allows the doctor to evaluate:

  • Bladder shape and size
  • Internal and external contours
  • Wall thickness and integrity
  • Volume and structure of bladder contents
  • Presence of injuries or tumors

Conditions diagnosed through bladder ultrasound include:

  1. Cystitis – The acute form is characterized by the presence of blood elements, while the chronic form manifests as thickened walls and an irregular bladder contour.
  2. Polyps, stones, and prostate adenoma in men – Large growths on the mucous membrane may indicate tumors.
  3. Foreign bodies – Stones, blood clots, or foreign objects appear on the screen as mobile inclusions.
  4. Prostate hyperplasia and urinary retention issues – An enlarged bladder may indicate stones, prostate adenoma, or incomplete bladder emptying.

The interpretation of ultrasound results is performed exclusively by a sonologist, who provides an accurate explanation of any detected abnormalities.
