Thyroid ultrasound

What is a Thyroid Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive and safe diagnostic method that helps assess the condition of internal organs. During a thyroid ultrasound, a doctor uses sound waves to create an image of the gland, allowing for the evaluation of its size, structure, tissue uniformity, and the presence of nodules, cysts, or other formations.

This examination is prescribed when symptoms indicate endocrine system disorders. It is also recommended as part of preventive check-ups, especially for individuals at high risk of thyroid diseases. The procedure is quick (lasting up to 20 minutes), comfortable, and does not require special preparation.

When to Have a Thyroid Ultrasound?

A thyroid ultrasound is performed to diagnose and monitor the condition of the endocrine system. Key indications include:

  • Menstrual cycle disorders or hormonal imbalance
  • Use of hormone therapy
  • Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Chronic fatigue, depression, or sudden mood swings
  • Throat discomfort: a lump sensation, cough, or pain while swallowing unrelated to colds
  • Unexplained fever
  • Physical changes: hair loss, brittle nails, or peeling skin

Additionally, a thyroid ultrasound is recommended:

  • When planning pregnancy to rule out any potential thyroid-related complications
  • For individuals with a family history of endocrine diseases
  • To monitor treatment progress or during post-surgical recovery

If you experience these symptoms or belong to a high-risk group, it is important to schedule a consultation with an endocrinologist. The doctor will conduct an examination, review your medical history, and, if necessary, recommend an ultrasound for an accurate diagnosis.

What Can a Thyroid Ultrasound Detect?

The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in hormonal regulation, and its dysfunction can lead to serious diseases such as carcinoma, autoimmune thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, and others. A thyroid ultrasound helps determine:

  • The position and shape of the thyroid gland
  • Its size and volume
  • The presence of focal formations such as nodules
  • The structure of the gland based on echogenicity (hypo- or hyperechogenicity)
  • The condition of blood flow and lymph nodes
  • Displacement of nearby structures, including the trachea, blood vessels, and nerves

The thyroid gland has a dense capsule and uniform tissue. Hypoechogenicity or hyperechogenicity may indicate pathology. Modern scanners provide 3D imaging, Doppler studies, and allow for a detailed assessment of blood circulation and vascular conditions. Thyroid ultrasound also helps visualize the parathyroid glands if they deviate from their normal position. Additionally, a biochemical blood test for ionized calcium may be recommended.

How Is a Thyroid Ultrasound Performed?

The procedure is quick and straightforward. The patient lies down and exposes the neck area. A special gel is applied to the skin, and the doctor moves the ultrasound probe over the area at different angles. The findings are recorded in a report provided to the patient along with the images. The examination typically takes 10-15 minutes.

Thyroid ultrasound is safe and painless, making it suitable for children and pregnant women. It is advisable to consult an endocrinologist or general practitioner before the procedure to obtain a referral. Bringing previous test results is recommended to track changes over time.

For individuals under 50, a thyroid ultrasound is recommended every five years as a preventive measure. After 50, it should be done every 2-3 years if there are no symptoms or genetic predispositions to endocrine diseases. For those already diagnosed with thyroid conditions, monthly ultrasounds may be necessary for treatment monitoring. People working in hazardous environments or living in areas with poor ecological conditions should undergo screening twice a year.

The procedure has no significant contraindications. However, the gel should not be applied to skin with burns, rashes, eczema, or streptoderma.

What Conditions Can a Thyroid Ultrasound Detect?

Ultrasound allows doctors to assess the gland’s size, tissue density, structure, and boundaries. It also helps identify follicular changes and nodules. Common conditions diagnosed through thyroid ultrasound in Kyiv include:

  1. Cysts – generally harmless but may become inflamed or rupture, causing fever and severe neck pain
  2. Benign and malignant tumors
  3. Nodular goiter – a condition where nodules with clear boundaries and distinct shapes form in the thyroid
  4. Diffuse toxic goiter – an enlargement of the thyroid due to excessive hormone production, leading to symptoms such as tachycardia, fatigue, and weight loss
  5. Thyroiditis – an inflammation of the gland causing swelling, headaches, and neck pain
  6. Hypothyroidism – a reduction in thyroid size due to decreased hormone production, leading to a slowed metabolism and other related symptoms

Regular thyroid ultrasounds help detect abnormalities early and ensure timely treatment, promoting overall endocrine health.
