Ultrasound of the breast gland in men

Ultrasound of the Male Breast: The Importance of Regular Examinations

Ultrasound of the breast is an important procedure that allows for the timely detection of potential diseases, including cancerous growths. Although breast cancer is less common in men than in women, this does not diminish the importance of regular screenings. Breast ultrasound in men is recommended when there are lumps or pain in the breast, changes in the appearance of the breast (such as enlargement or retraction of the nipple), nipple discharge, or a family history of cancer.

The benefits of the procedure include safety, painlessness, the detection of benign and malignant tumors in the early stages, and the possibility of using it as an additional method alongside mammography. Regular breast examinations are crucial for early detection of issues and effective treatment.

When to Have a Breast Ultrasound in Men

A breast ultrasound in men is performed when there is suspicion of gynecomastia. This is a benign tumor that does not pose a life-threatening risk but needs to be monitored and treated. Symptoms of gynecomastia include nipple discharge, breast pain, lumps, and noticeable enlargement of the breast. Men undergo examinations less frequently than women, but it is necessary to detect tumor formations or pathological processes in a timely manner. Although breast cancer is rare in men, such cases do occur, usually against the background of hormonal imbalances.

There are two types of gynecomastia: true and pseudogynecomastia. The latter develops due to excessive calorie consumption and overeating. If changes in breast shape are noticed, it is important to consult a doctor for an examination. Ultrasound helps determine the cause of gynecomastia and prescribe treatment.

Breast Ultrasound in Men: Indications and Symptoms

Breast ultrasound in men is performed in several cases when there is suspicion of a pathology. The main indications include:

  • nipple or breast pain;
  • significant changes in the shape of the breast, enlargement, or lumps;
  • changes in the skin texture: the appearance of sores, damage, or redness;
  • emotional changes: irritability, aggression, sharp mood swings;
  • sudden weight gain, especially in the chest area;
  • hormonal imbalances detected by blood tests;
  • nipple discharge;
  • presence of lumps or lumps in the chest area noticeable by palpation;
  • moistening or redness of the nipples, which may indicate inflammation;
  • breast enlargement without a visible cause.

It is important not to ignore symptoms and to seek timely medical attention for diagnosis. This will help identify a disease at an early stage and start the necessary treatment.

How Breast Ultrasound Is Done in Men

The ultrasound is performed while lying on your back. The procedure lasts no longer than 20 minutes, including the time to prepare the conclusion. The sonographer conducts the examination at the appointed time using a high-class stationary device. All sensors are disinfected after each patient, eliminating the risk of infection. During the procedure, you need to remove the upper part of your clothing and lie on your back on the examination table, covered with a disposable sheet. One hand should be placed under your head so that the breast tissue is parallel to the skin, ensuring accurate results. The back position helps avoid edge shadowing and maintains focus accuracy. If the breast tissue is too thick, the doctor may ask you to turn onto your side to improve visualization.

The examination process consists of several stages. The sensor is positioned at the 3 o’clock level, next to the areola, and then gradually moved to the periphery of the breast. Next, the sensor is positioned at the 4 o’clock level, and the examination continues in a circular motion until the entire breast has been examined. The process is repeated for the other side. Breast ultrasound in men helps to rule out or confirm the presence of various diseases, such as cysts, gynecomastia, tumors, or metastases. Based on the results, the doctor may recommend additional diagnostic methods.

Benefits of Breast Ultrasound in Men

Ultrasound is a safe and effective diagnostic method, not associated with radiation exposure, making it possible to use it without restrictions. Ultrasound is particularly useful for adolescents and men with a lean or asthenic physique, for whom radiography often provides less informative results.

Breast ultrasound in men allows for precise examination of the chest, detecting even small formations that are not visible on X-rays. Ultrasound is also useful in cases where there is suspicion of malignant tumors, as it enables evaluation of the regional lymph nodes and the detection of any damage.
