Ultrasound of the spleen

Ultrasound Examination of the Spleen in Modern Medicine

Ultrasound examination is an essential diagnostic method that provides accurate data on the condition of the spleen and other abdominal organs. Modern technologies ensure high-quality imaging, allowing for the early detection of various diseases.

The spleen plays a key role in the immune system and blood circulation. Ultrasound enables the assessment of its size and structure, helping to detect abnormalities such as enlargement (splenomegaly), inflammatory processes, or tumors. This examination is also useful for diagnosing infections, blood disorders, injuries, and metastases.

The procedure is safe for patients of all ages, causing no pain or discomfort. Ultrasound is widely available in medical facilities and is one of the most effective methods for evaluating organ health, aiding doctors in making accurate diagnoses and prescribing appropriate treatment.

Indications for a Spleen Ultrasound

Ultrasound examination is a crucial diagnostic tool for detecting spleen pathologies. It is recommended in the following cases:

  • Suspected tumors or the need to rule them out;
  • Abdominal trauma, including contusions and ruptures;
  • Chronic liver diseases (cirrhosis, hepatitis);
  • Infectious diseases (mononucleosis, malaria, tuberculosis);
  • Congenital anomalies;
  • Blood disorders (anemia, leukemia, thrombocytopenia);
  • Lymphatic system diseases (lymphoma, lymphadenitis);
  • Suspected metastases or other neoplasms;
  • Spleen hyperfunction.

Ultrasound allows for a quick and accurate assessment of the spleen’s condition, which is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.

What a Spleen Ultrasound Reveals

During the procedure, the patient lies on their right side with the left arm placed under the head. The doctor conducts the examination while the patient holds their breath on a deep inhale, which improves visualization by expanding the intercostal space.

Key parameters evaluated during an ultrasound include:

  1. Organ positioning: Identifying anomalies in spleen location.
  2. Size: Measuring length, width, and thickness. In a healthy person, the spleen’s length is 11-12 cm, width is 6-8 cm, and thickness can reach up to 5 cm.
  3. Structure: Detecting tissue abnormalities, cysts, tumors, abscesses, or degenerative changes.

Spleen enlargement, often detected during ultrasound, may indicate various diseases. Therefore, careful evaluation of organ size and related symptoms is essential. Deviations in parameters do not always indicate pathology but require further observation and diagnosis.

When to Get a Spleen Ultrasound: Symptoms

A doctor may recommend an ultrasound if a patient experiences:

  • Discomfort or pain in the left upper abdomen;
  • A sensation of heaviness and fullness in the stomach;
  • Abdominal swelling;
  • Yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes;
  • Frequent infections and blood disorders;
  • Enlarged lymph nodes.

In cases of trauma, impacts, or falls, ultrasound helps detect internal damage or organ ruptures. Additionally, it is useful for prolonged digestive issues, such as persistent abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or nausea, to rule out spleen pathologies.

How to Prepare for a Spleen Ultrasound

Although ultrasound is a non-invasive and safe procedure, proper preparation is important for obtaining accurate results. Key recommendations include:

  1. Fasting before the procedure. Avoid eating for 6-8 hours before the exam to reduce intestinal gas and improve visualization. In some cases, drinking water is allowed, but this should be confirmed with the doctor.
  2. Dietary restrictions. Refrain from foods that cause bloating, such as legumes, cabbage, dairy products, carbonated drinks, cheese, and black bread.
  3. Reducing gas formation. If prone to bloating, taking a sorbent (such as activated charcoal or Espumizan) a day before the ultrasound can help. Consult a doctor regarding the appropriate dosage.
  4. Wearing comfortable clothing. Choose loose-fitting clothes that allow easy access to the abdomen. Avoid tight belts or waistbands.
  5. Hydration guidance. In some cases, drinking a small amount of water before the procedure may be recommended for better imaging.

Before the examination, inform your doctor about any chronic conditions (liver, kidney, or heart diseases) and any medications you are taking to ensure proper interpretation of the results.
