Ultrasound of the adrenal glands

Adrenal Ultrasound: About the Procedure

The adrenal glands are paired endocrine organs that play an important role in metabolism and the body’s adaptation to stress. They are the main sources of adrenaline and norepinephrine — hormones that help the body mobilize reserves under stress. Additionally, the adrenal glands participate in the synthesis of corticosteroids, which regulate metabolism and maintain homeostasis. These organs are located near the kidneys, making them accessible for ultrasound examination.

Adrenal ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic method that allows accurate assessment of the shape, condition, and size of the organs. The procedure uses ultrasound, making it completely painless and safe for the patient. It has no age restrictions and is recommended for both children and adults.

Indications for Adrenal Ultrasound

Ultrasound is prescribed in cases where there are suspicions of dysfunction in the body. Indications for the procedure include:

  • Lower back pain of a dull or pulling nature;
  • Painful urination;
  • Change in urine color, presence of blood;
  • Changes in skin pigmentation or sudden appearance of stretch marks;
  • Weakness, fatigue, depression, sleep problems, and increased irritability;
  • Unexplained or sudden weight changes;
  • Sexual dysfunction, infertility, menstrual cycle issues in women;
  • Excessive hair growth;
  • Family history of related diseases;
  • Endocrine system disorders;
  • Abdominal injuries.

Adrenal ultrasound can also be performed at the patient’s request, but the necessity of the examination is always determined by the doctor based on complaints, physical examination, and laboratory test results.

How to Prepare for Adrenal Ultrasound

For a successful ultrasound examination, several important recommendations should be followed. The examination is usually conducted in the morning. The procedure should be performed on an empty stomach, with no food intake at least 12 hours prior to the examination. Three days before the adrenal ultrasound, a special diet should be followed, excluding products that cause gas formation:

  • Black bread;
  • Milk;
  • Cabbage;
  • Peas, beans;
  • Juices and carbonated beverages;
  • Sweets;
  • Raw vegetables and fruits;
  • Fatty foods.

In some cases, the doctor may prescribe special medications to normalize intestinal motility and reduce bloating. During the examination, the patient lies on the examination table. They must lift the upper part of their clothing to expose the abdomen, sides, and lower back. A special gel is applied to the skin, and the ultrasound probe is moved across it. The procedure typically takes about 20 minutes. After the examination, the doctor prepares the report and determines the treatment plan if necessary.

Diseases Diagnosed by Adrenal Ultrasound

Ultrasound helps diagnose a number of conditions associated with adrenal gland dysfunction. These include:

  1. Adrenocortical tumors — benign or malignant growths that may change the size and structure of the organs;
  2. Pheochromocytoma — a tumor that causes excessive production of adrenaline and norepinephrine, which can lead to high blood pressure and heart attack;
  3. Hyperplasia — enlargement of the adrenal glands related to hormonal production issues, such as in Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome;
  4. Cysts — fluid-filled sacs that form in the organ tissues and cause pain or other symptoms;
  5. Structural changes — alterations in the shape and size of the organs indicating inflammation or injury;
  6. Adenomas — benign tumors that affect hormonal balance and cause high blood pressure or excessive hair growth;
  7. Metastases — spread of malignant cells to the adrenal glands from other organs.

Adrenal ultrasound is an important method for detecting diseases at early stages, allowing timely treatment to begin.

Adrenal Ultrasound: Benefits of the Procedure

Ultrasound is a safe, painless, and highly informative diagnostic method that helps accurately assess the condition of internal organs. The procedure has several important benefits:

  1. Ultrasound is completely safe for health. It is suitable for all patient categories, including pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers;
  2. Ultrasound does not require complex preparation and is an accessible procedure for most patients;
  3. The examination is performed in several positions (lying on the stomach, back, or side), which helps obtain the most accurate picture of the organ’s condition.

Adrenal ultrasound in Kyiv can be performed without a doctor’s referral, allowing patients to decide independently when and where to undergo the examination.
