Volvulus is one of the forms of intestinal obstruction. In this condition, a segment of the intestine twists, which may lead to impaired blood supply and obstruction of intestinal contents.
The severity of the condition depends on the degree of intestinal twisting and the duration of impaired blood flow. Therefore, timely diagnosis is important when intestinal obstruction is suspected.
In most cases, volvulus requires surgical treatment. In certain situations, endoscopic untwisting of the intestine may be possible, however the final treatment strategy is determined by the doctor after examination.
