During a colposcopy, the gynecologist examines the cervix, vagina, and outer portions of the cervix using a special optical instrument called a colposcope. It provides high magnification of the tissues, helping identify epithelial changes, signs of inflammatory processes, dysplasia, and other conditions that may require monitoring or treatment.
Before the examination, the doctor reviews the results of previous tests and examinations, the patient’s concerns, and the characteristics of her menstrual cycle. If necessary, additional testing or an individualized follow-up plan may be recommended after the colposcopy.
